International travel rules for pets

We answer the question "How do I take my pet abroad", which is a curiosity for many pet owners, in detail for you, our esteemed readers.

Things to Do Before Taking Your Pet Abroad

  • You should prepare the passport with pet vaccinations.

Your pets need a passport. Nowadays, it is not possible to travel without a passport. For this reason, you can obtain it from Pet health institutions and your veterinarian.

  • All vaccinations must be done in order for your pet to travel abroad.

Your vaccinations are processed on the pet passport. You can consult your veterinarian and ask what vaccinations are missing for going abroad. Vaccines are paid. Vaccination fees vary according to veterinarians.

  • Rabies Vaccine

Your pets that will travel to Turkey must be vaccinated against rabies. You can also ask your veterinarian if a rabies titration test report is required. (For Turkey, it is sufficient to have the vaccine and write it in the passport.)

You must complete these procedures at least 10 days before your trip.

1 passenger can bring 2 pets with him/her.

Some breeds of animals require special permission. You can get help from your veterinarians.

Your pet must leave Turkey within 10 days. Otherwise, they cannot leave the country for up to 40 days. We recommend that you plan your trip in accordance with these rules.

After completing all the procedures, let’s start learning how to travel with your pet and their rules.

Our Pets Travel by Airplane

After completing the above procedures, you can get information by calling which airline you want to fly with.

Our Pets Travel by Airplane
  1. In some airline companies, pets can be transported in limited numbers. Be sure to ask for this information before the flight time.
  2. Ask whether your pet can be transported in the cabin or in the trunk, based on its age, height and weight.
  3. Ask about the carry case, dimensions and additional procedures as the transport procedures in the trunk and in the cabin are different.
  4. If your pet will be transported in the cabin, the allergen status of the people sitting in the next seat should be learned. For this, the airline company can call people and get approval.
  5. All the documents you have prepared for your pet to travel should be with you before boarding the plane and should be given to the personnel who request it.
  6. Make sure your pet is calm, odorless and clean.
  7. An extra fee is required for your pet to travel by plane (it varies according to airline companies). Check if your budget is appropriate.
  8. You can have your health status checked after your trip from our veterinarians at airports in Turkey.

Traveling Our Pets By Bus

If you are going to travel to Turkey by bus from abroad. Here are our suggestions you should know;

  1. Contact the bus company you will use and find out if they will accept it.
  2. Keep all the documents mentioned above with you. (Required at customs passes)
  3. Since the luggage spaces of bus companies are narrow, pets are usually carried on passenger seats and on the lap.
  4. Bus travels are not recommended as they take longer than airplanes and are more uncomfortable than sea transport and are harmful to pet health.

We recommend that you travel with your own personal vehicle instead of bus travel.

Our Pets Travel by Ship

If you are planning a cruise with your pet, please read our recommendations below.

Our Pets Travel by Ship
  1. If you want to travel with your pet on the ship, you must complete all the documents we have written above and keep them with you.
  2. We recommend that you call the cruise company you will use on your trip with your pet and ask if they have pet cabins.
  3. Your pets travel in special sections on the ship. Ask if your pet is suitable by providing age, weight and breed information.
  4. Except for these special sections, your pet cannot be walked on the ship without a leash and muzzle.
  5. Your pet must be calm and clean in order to be transported on board.

Do not neglect the food, drink and toilet of our little friends on long trips.

Our most important advice is never withhold your love from them. Good day 🙂
